Vocal Exercises
Singing is a skill much like any other. It must be practiced regularly in order to be mastered. Using vocal exercises can help you improve your singing skills and strengthen your instrument, which is your voice. The first step is to relax your body and mind before beginning practice. This can be achieved with some light stretching and breathing exercises. When doing controlled breathing, allow the air to fill your diaphragm and expand your abdomen before expanding your chest. Keep your exhale slow and even, stretching it out as long as you can. Doing a few minutes of breathing exercises each day can help you strengthen and control your breath.
There are plenty of exercises you can do to improve your voice. First, try singing the syllables 'le' and 'la.' Do this exercise for a few minutes. Next, practice singing the vowels a, e, i, o and u. When you do this exercise, precede the vowels with the consonant 'm.' The exercise will sound like may, mee, my, mo and mu (pronounced moo.) When doing this exercise watch to make sure your breath is steady and even. Five minutes of practice should be enough for beginners. You can work up to longer durations of practice over time.
To strengthen and condition your diaphragm, take a deep breath. Count slowly and steadily out loud while exhaling. This helps improve your ability to hold long notes. And let's not forget about the rest of your body. Exercises that strengthen the heart and lungs, such as cardiovascular activity, can also help you improve as a singer. Working out regularly can help you achieve a healthier, more fit body and make your singing practice more effective. Even taking a brisk walk each day can really make a difference in your level of total fitness.
Another way to exercise your vocals is by singing a few lines of a familiar song. The first verse of Somewhere Over the Rainbow is an ideal warmup. If you have a favorite song you should definitely practice singing it as well. Vocal exercises will only work for you if you are consistent and patient. The more you exercise your breathing and your voice, the better you will be able to sing. After a few weeks of practice you should notice that you are improving. You will be able to hold notes for a longer period of time and gain greater mastery over your voice.
